In January 2022, an immersive experience celebrating Aotearoa, art, and marine conservation came to Auckland.
For 12 weeks, the uniquely designed and painted whale Tail sculptures dotted the streets, parks and open spaces of Tāmaki Makaurau – forming a free, family-friendly public art trail for all to enjoy.
The trail featured 80 Big Broos (large Tail sculptures) and 82 Pēpi (mini Tail sculptures) that were turned into bespoke pieces of art by well-known and emerging kiwi artists and schools.
The Tails – inspired by the endangered Bryde’s whale – told the “tales” of our moana and how we all have a part to play for a healthy ocean.
The Whale Tails left their locations on 18 April 2021 and the Big Broos were auctioned at The Maritime Room, Auckland on 2nd May.
The total taken on the night was over $650,000 and proceeds will help fund WWF-New Zealand’s vital work to help protect New Zealand’s marine environment and its taonga species.
Thank you to all our sponsors, partners, supporters, artists, schools, the local community and residents for making this happen.
We have loved adding colour, fun and joy to Tāmaki Makaurau, we hope you enjoyed the trail too.
This event was brought to you by WWF-New Zealand and Wild in Art, and made possible through the support of Auckland Unlimited and presenting partner, Harcourts.
