Ngā Toi Kauaerunga | Ngāti Awa

Ngā Toi Kauaerunga is the studio of intercultural artist James Paratii Lainchbury, whose practice involves the trans-customary use of whakairo and kowhaiwhai. By pushing and weaving these powerful narrative visual styles through new material and ideological representations, the artist creates new stories for the present. Contemporary urban-influenced fluid forms and colours flow through the customary block and curves of pou whakairo figures giving them a modern twist into the now.
