Kaitiakitanga means guardianship and protection. It is a way of managing the environment, based on the Māori world view. Many stories tell of whales as guides for those on their journey to Aotearoa, and many other occasions where they’ve come to our aid. It is time for us to offer them protection against the many obstacles they face in the present, and guide them to a future where they can roam carefree in our oceans.
