Kia Aroha College
Throughout Te Aö Mäori/the Mäori world, Mäori hold a special connection with the tohorä/whale. In Te Tairäwhiti/East Coast Ngati Konohi of Whangarä mai Tawhiti know about the ancestor, Paikea who arrived at their tribal district on a whale. In Ngä Puhi, Ngati Whatua ki Kaipara and Ngati Wai, whales play a significant role in their tribal narratives.
We are excited to participate in this project enabling our rangatahi/young people to learn about the importance of whales to Te Aö Mäori and Te Aö Pasifika. Through generations, tribal waiata and haka have been composed for their learning.
