Department of Conservation

The Department of Conservation (DOC), along with mana whenua, partner agencies and many community groups and individuals, works to support positive outcomes for species success here in the city we love.  The Hauraki Gulf Marine Park/Tīkapa Moana is New Zealand’s only national park of sea.  At a whopping 1.2m hectares, the Park enjoys visits from 25 of the 88 species of whale and dolphin found globally, more than 60 species of ray call it home, it is the seabird capital of the world and is one of only three residential populations of Bryder’s whales (pronounced Brooders) in the world. The predator-free islands in the Park guarantee safe havens for hundreds of species of forest, sea and shore birds as well as our unique tuatara and more than 100 species of lizards.  We have much to be proud of and are pleased to be a supporting partner of Whales Tales 2022.
