Ports of Auckland
Ports of Auckland worked with the shipping industry, scientists and other stakeholders, to develop a voluntary protocol for ships travelling through the Hauraki Gulf. The port protocol lowers vessel speeds and through passage planning reduces the risk of collisions and deaths of Bryde’s Whales. Since the protocol was implemented, there has been significantly fewer Bryde’s Whale deaths in the Gulf caused by ship strike. Ports of Auckland continues to support work to save and protect the Bryde’s Whale.
